Training Level : This course will contain basic through advanced concepts. Students will be expected to demonstrate proficiency of critical elements, including but not limited to acquisition and evidence handling.
Who Should Attend : Intelligence and counter-terrorism officers and analysts, public and private sector detectives, crime scene analysts/investigators, evidence/ID technicians, and loss prevention personnel who have a need for handling and processing video evidence, as well as attorneys, paralegals, and legal video production practitioners who could benefit from a better understanding of video evidence and potential challenges to that evidence in legal proceedings.
Prerequisites : A high level of competence with the Windows OS environment. Because of the intense, graphic nature of some examples used for instruction, students must be willing and able to view content that may be objectionable or upsetting to laypersons. Highly desirable (but not required) student traits would include familiarization or experience with evidence photography, video camera and recording technology, and/or image processing software.
Note : Each student must bring their own laptop. Minimum laptop requirements will be provided at time of registration.

Course Description

Students will learn how to properly secure, preserve, and process video evidence from a variety of sources such as CCTV systems at crime scenes and accident scenes, police patrol car video systems, camera equipped mobile phones and PDAs, video oriented Internet social networking sites (e.g., YouTube and Vimeo), fixed and mobile investigative surveillance platforms, and consumer, "prosumer", and professional camcorders. Attendees will expand their skill sets to extract imagery, and thus investigative leads or intelligence, from video that might have otherwise been disregarded as worthless.

Participants will receive an overview of forensic video processing software including Cognitech TriSuite, and useful complimentary/supplemental low and no cost video software utilities and plug-ins. At the conclusion of this course, students will be evaluated on their ability to acquire and decode as necessary video from analog and digital sources, perform basic image processing and enhancement tasks, document their procedures and findings, and articulate those procedures to introduce their processed images and video as evidence.
